What does your organisation do?
Iuvantium was founded on the conviction that immunobiology can be decoded through systematic interrogation, and that the probe to do so is inorganic in nature. Iuvantium designs inorganic nanoparticles that act as both probe and therapeutic: first interrogating the immune system to map how physicochemical properties drive immune behaviour, then encoding the precise response needed into the material itself.
Iuvantium combines more than 40 years of frontier immunology and 20 years of functional inorganic material science, embodied by our co-founders Emeritus Prof Jon Austyn and Dr. Björn Schimmöller respectively. Together they developed a platform at the intersection of inorganic chemistry and biology. Immunology has remained largely trial and error because it has been approached almost entirely through organic chemistry and biology. Iuvantium brought the toolkit of the physical sciences to it instead, and that changes what becomes possible.
Why did you choose to build in Oxfordshire?
Iuvantium's founding science originated at Oxford. A rare cross-disciplinary project between the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Nuffield Department for Surgical Sciences laid the foundation for what is now Iuvantium over 16 years ago. We remain deeply embedded in the Oxford community, drawing on its unusual density of expertise across materials science, immunology, machine learning and translational medicine.
What big problem are you trying to solve?
Modern medicine is good at telling the immune system what to attack. It is remarkably bad at controlling how it responds. There is no reliable way to program the quality, magnitude, or type of an immune response, which is why drug development still fails roughly 90% of the time and why diseases from autoimmune conditions to many cancers remain out of reach. If immune responses could be engineered with the precision we bring to catalysts or semiconductors, it would change what medicine can do for almost every major disease category. That is the problem we exist to solve.
How can you support the Oxfordshire ecosystem?
Oxford's talent pool will be central to Iuvantium’s growth. We benefit enormously from access to the city’s expertise in science, entrepreneurship and venture capital, and from an ecosystem that supports the growth of science-led companies. In return, we offer a genuinely novel modality and platform that crosses disciplines not usually found in the same room, and we are always glad to collaborate with researchers and founders working at the intersection of the physical and life sciences. We also run the Iuvantium Summer Internship Program (ISIP) each summer to provide undergraduate and graduate students hands-on experience in a frontier start-up. Two cohorts have completed it so far, and several of our current team first joined us through it.
